Kat and Stephan were the only passengers on the agency jet at the private hangar near Brandenburg Airport. After receiving a nod from the captain, they took flight and headed to Bucharest, with a flight time of under two hours.

“Did you mean what you said about contacting the Romanian Special Forces?” Stephan asked as they left Berlin.

“Not a word of it. If we tried to link up with the Romanians, we would alert Lupu’s former friends in the Romanian Mafia. I’m sure they possess contacts with the Bucharest Police. The moment we contact them, we would hand them our lives.”

“We are breaking into a mafia stronghold with no backup?”

“No. I contacted Steiner. He has two of the best break-and-enter ex-criminals ready to assist tonight.”

“Oh, one of your usual uncomplicated plans,” Stephan said. He slumped down in his chair to sleep.

Kat was wide awake. She should have followed Stephan’s example to catch a power nap, but her senses were alive. Hanna Winter had controlled the narrative of the events since Venice and everything about this screamed it was a trap.

Kat would enter the lair of Hanna Winter and face off with her. That seemed inevitable from the moment she’d discovered her crimes. One of them would win. Kat liked her chances, but it was not a certainty.
